WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2023
What happens if the scores are tied in the Women’s World Cup final between England and Spain
The final between England and Spain kicks off at 6 a.m. ET at the Stadium Australia in Sydney. What happens if the teams are deadlocked after the regulation 90 minutes.
England and Spain are both playing their first Women’s World Cup final today, Sunday, 20 August, which kicks off at 6 a.m. ET (8 p.m. local time) at the Stadium Australia in Sydney.
If the score between the two teams is tied at the end of the regulation 90 minutes then a further 30 minutes of extra-time will be played.
If the game goes to extra-time each team will receive one additional substitution in addition to the original five.
Penalty shoot-out after extra-time
If after the 30 minutes of extra-time the scores are still tied, then the final will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
The penalty shoot-out consists of five penalties taken by each team. If the number of penalties scored is equal after those five penalties the shoot-out moves to sudden death, where the winner will be the team that scores with the other team failing to convert.
Only the players on the pitch at the end of extra-time can take part in the penalty shoot-out, but the order of penalty takers is up to each team. Each penalty must be taken by a different player until all the players have taken one penalty, including the goalkeeper. If the game has still not been decided at that point the players will each take another penalty until the game has been decided. Note that the order of the takers does not have to be the same as the first set of penalties.
What happens if a goalkeeper is injured during the penalty shoot-out
If a goalkeeper is injured during the shoot-out, then that team can replace the keeper with a substitute, but only if they haven’t used all their substitutes during the game. However, if the keeper is sent off, then another player who finished the game and is taking part in the shoot-out must act as goalkeeper.
What happens if a player takes too long to take their penalty?
Penalty kicks must not be delayed for any reason, for example a player leaving the field of play and not returning in time to take their kick. In that case the penalty will be forfeit and count as not having been scored.
