What is a ‘clean sheet’ in soccer?

In the world of soccer, a clean sheet refers to a team managing to avoid conceding any goals during a single match. This term is often used to describe a goalkeeper’s performance, or an overall defensive effort from the team, and is a testament to their skill and ability to keep the opposing team at bay.
How important is is a clean sheet in soccer?
When a team keeps a clean sheet, depending on the opposition, of course, it is a significant accomplishment, as it usually demonstrates their defensive prowess and ability to either limit their opponent’s chance creation, negate their actual efforts at goal... or occasionally prove that luck is an important factor in some sports!
Although scoring goals is the main focus for a team - and its impossible to win a game without bothering the other net - keeping a clean sheet is often celebrated by the entire team and the coaching staff just as much. It’s a collective effort.
In the modern game, keeping a clean sheet is a vital aspect of the game, and many teams prioritise their defensive efforts to prevent the other team from scoring. A clean sheet can often be the difference between winning and losing a match, and it is a critical component of any successful team’s strategy.
Dutch legend Johan Cruyff once said, “To win you have to score one more goal than your opponent.” And anyone who remembers George Graham’s Arsenal in England, often that meant just the single strike was enough.
Do clean sheets count for Golden Glove awards?
A goalkeeper who keeps a clean sheet is often hailed as the hero of the match, and there are various awards on offer in competitions around the world. Take the English Premier League, for example, each season the Golden Glove trophy is given to the stopper with the most number of shutouts across the campaign (currently 38 games). In the history of this competition two keepers have managed to win this accolade a record four times, namely Joe Hart and Petr Cech.
In the pinnacle of international soccer, at the FIFA World Cup, there is also an award for the best goalkeeper, and Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez won this at the latest edition in Qatar 2022. Clean sheets, however, are not the decisive factor here. Instead the winner is chosen by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
