LIGA MX

What is Club América’s record in Liga MX playoffs semi-finals?

No team has played as many last-four ‘liguilla’ ties but Las Águilas haven’t done especially well in the penultimate round.

Club América have been touted by many as the team to beat in the Liga MX Apertura 2023 playoffs, a view that is reinforced by statistics. At least to a certain extent. Since the liguilla was introduced to the Mexico to flight in 1970, no team has won more matches in the last four of the competition.

Las Aguillas’ low win rate in the semi-finals

That said, Las Águilas have actually lost more semi-finals than they have won, coming out on top just 16 times in 39 attempts. As a result, they have a considerably lower win rate at that stage than almost anyone else, including both Pumas and Tigres, who have also reached the last four in the current tournament.

What are Pumas, Tigres and Atlético San Luis’ records?

UNAM have progressed from 11 of their 20 semi-final match-ups, although even that record pales in comparison to Los Auriazules, who can consider themselves the last-four specialists with 11 victories from 16 ties.

The Apertura 2023′s fourth semi-finalists, Atlético San Luis, were only founded in 2013 and have never reached his stage, although San Luis FC, the team they effectively replaced, won two Liga MX titles in 2002 and 2004.

In the history of the Liga MX playoffs, América, Tigres and Pumas are joined by Cruz Azul, Toluca, Santos Laguna, Chivas and Monterrey in the list of teams who have competed in the semi-finals most often.

When do the Liga MX Apertura 2023 semi-finals take place?

The first leg of the last-four clash between Atlético San Luis and América will get underway on Wednesday (10pm ET), with the return to be played at Estadio Azteca on Saturday (9pm ET). The Pumas vs Tigres tie will take place on Thursday (10pm ET) and Sunday (9pm ET), with UNAM hosting the first leg.
