LIGA MX

What team does Mexican boxer Canelo Álvarez support in the Liga MX final?

Pachuca and Toluca are battling it out over two legs for the Liga MX Apertura 2022 title, but which team gets Álvarez’s love?

A stunning four-goal flurry in the first half led to Pachuca leaving Toluca with a 1-5 lead after the first leg of the Liga MX Apertura final. It’s fair to say that even the most optimistic Toluca fan will be struggling to come up with a way back to the title he or she was dreaming about ahead of kick-off.

Canelo Álvarez Pachuca or Toluca?

As thoughts focused ever more on this season’s final, one question that was doing the rounds -- excuse the pun -- was which of the two finalists Mexican boxing superstar Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez was putting his weight behind. He has been the face of boxing for almost a decade and will be included in the Hall of Fame when he finally decides to hang up his gloves, but which team does he support?

Well, the truth is he doesn’t appear to care too much for either of our finalists in this season’s Apertura. Firstly, a quick look at his social media feed, which is normally pretty active, and there is no sign of any final interest. More importantly, however, is what the boxer said at the end of last season.

Canelo Álvarez thinking Atlas then Chivas

Invited to the final between Atlas and Pachuca, Álvarez was asked if he was a fan of the club based at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara.

“Yes, I am an Atlas supporter,” he confidently replied.

That said, there were some doubts and he was questioned whether or not he had previously been a Chivas fan, the team also from Guadalajara.

“I was never a fan of any team,” he confirmed, “but now I am 100% with Atlas.”

I am behind both of them [Chivas and Atlas],” he then muddied the waters, “but I’m behind Atlas now, to be honest.”

We’ve not been able to get a concrete answer in the meantime but one thing seems sure: he doesn’t care very much who wins this year’s Apertura, with eyes now looking to the Clausura title.
