The Premier League and Liga MX remain the two most popular competitions for TV viewers stateside, with MLS still some way back.
Soccer in the United States continues to grow by leaps and bounds and although MLS is still a work in progress, some of its clubs are beginning to be among the most popular for fans who watch games on television.
However, competitions such as Mexico’s Liga MX and the Premier League in England remain the most viewed in the U.S., with clubs from those two leagues still the go-to for armchair followers of the sport.
Club América the most watched team in the United States
This was the main takeaway from a report listing the 100 most popular teams in the United States in terms of TV viewership on different platforms, including broadcast and pay-TV (streaming services such as Hulu TV and YouTube are also factored in). Although the Premier League is now the most watched competition ahead of Liga MX, one of Mexico’s heavyweight clubs is top of the pile.

The list, compiled by sports media analyst Larry Johnson and shared by World Soccer Talk, is headed by Apertura 2023 winners Club América, who lead the way from Champions League holders Manchester City, Mexican duo Chivas and Tigres, and Liverpool.
Real Madrid are in seventh spot, just behind Arsenal, while Barcelona are somewhat surprisingly all the way down in 25th, behind Bournemouth.
Messi’s Inter Miami the first of three MLS teams inside top 50
Only one MLS club makes the top 40, with Inter Miami, undoubtedly boosted by the Lionel Messi effect, coming in at 39. Will the presence of the Argentina captain, as well as former Barça teammate Luis Suárez, see their popularity increase in 2024? We can only assume so.
LAFC are the next MLS team on the list in 46th position, ahead of traditional European heavyweights AC Milan. Portland Timbers and Nashville SC are the two other U.S.-based teams inside the top 50.
