The Liga MX experienced a glut of goals on matchday 12 of the Clausura 2023 tournament. A total of 30 were scored throughout the weekend in the Mexican top flight, as an exciting round of soccer saw Monterrey and Club América win their respective Clásico clashes.

Matchday 12 started on Friday with a triple bill, and the goals began arriving right from the off. First, Atlas thrashed Puebla on the road, in a surprise result given the form La Franja have been in. Later, Tijuana and Toluca played out a 3-3 draw, in a game where Los Diablos Rojos gave up a three-goal half-time lead. Finally, Necaxa went to Mazatlán and came away with all three points thanks to a narrow win secured by Ricardo Monreal’s first-half goal.

Rayados, América win weekend’s big-name games

On Saturday, we had the Clásico Regio - the Monterrey derby between Rayados and Tigres - and the Clásico Nacional between Chivas and América. First, however, Cruz Azul recorded a 1-0 victory over Atlético San Luis. La Máquina’s fifth win in six games leaves them firmly in the postseason places.

Later, thanks to a great goal by Luis Romo, Rayados stretched their lead at the top of the table by beating Tigres, before América gave Chivas a reality check in the Clásico Nacional. Fernando Ortiz’s men comfortably beat their arch rivals in a match where they were by far the better side. Las Águilas won 4-2 at Chivas’ Estadio Akron and now sit second in the regular-season standings.

Pumas loss leads to Puente del Río exit

The matchday closed out on Sunday with important results. Pachuca defeated Pumas at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, prompting the resignation of Rafael Puente del Río as Los Auriazules’ coach. In the evening, there was a party atmosphere at La Corregidora, because after more than a year away, fans were allowed back in the stands. On the field, Querétaro and FC Juárez drew 2-2. In the final round-12 game, Club León thrashed Santos Laguna 4-1 at home.
