How did Real Madrid, Dortmund reach UCL final?

On Wednesday, Madrid pulled off a sensational late comeback to knock out Bayern and reach their ninth final in the Champions League era.

Following a 2-2 draw in last week’s first leg in Bavaria, Bayern took an aggregate lead in the return when Alphonso Davies rifled in a powerful effort with just over 20 minutes remaining in the Spanish capital.

However, Madrid substitute Joselu Mato scored in the 88th and 91st minutes to spark bedlam at the Bernabéu - and send Carlo Ancelotti’s men into the final. Los Blancos are now one step away from lifting a record-extending 15th European title.

On Tuesday, underdogs Dortmund dumped PSG out in the last four, as Mats Hummels’ second-half header in Paris earned the Germans a 2-0 aggregate victory over their bigger-name opponents.

Champions League winners in 1997, Dortmund will be appearing in their third final in Europe’s top men’s club competition, having lost the showpiece event to Bayern Munich in 2013.

BVB will come up against former star Jude Bellingham, who left Signal Iduna Park for Madrid for an initial €103 million ($110 million) transfer fee last summer.

How many times has Wembley hosted the UCL final?

This will be the third Champions League final to take place at Wembley.

The arena first hosted the event in 2011, when goals by Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa gave Barcelona a 3-1 triumph over Manchester United, in the process securing the fourth of the Catalan club’s total of five continental crowns.

Two years later, Dortmund went down 2-1 to Bayern in London, Arjen Robben’s late winner settling the all-German contest after Ilkay Gündogan’s penalty for BVB had cancelled out Mario Mandzukic’s opener. The win earned Bayern the fifth of their six European titles.

In the pre-Champions League era, Wembley also hosted five European Cup finals (in 1963, 1968, 1971, 1978 and 1992).

Real Madrid yet to lose a UCL final

While Dortmund have a 1-1 record in their two Champions League finals so far, Real Madrid have won all eight of their appearances in the trophy decider since the European Cup was rebranded in 1992.

Los Merengues, who are aiming for their second LaLiga-Champions League double in three years, haven’t lost in the final of a major European competition since being beaten 2-1 by Aberdeen in the 1983 Cup Winners’ Cup.

In the European Cup/Champions League, Madrid’s most recent final loss was a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in 1981.
