The 2023 UEFA Champions League round of 16 first legs are over, which means we are one step closer to knowing the identity of some of the clubs who will take part in the quarter-finals: Real Madrid, we’re looking at you.

The round of 16 is the anomaly in this year’s competition, as it’s the only round in which the second legs are not played the week immediately after the first. We’re going to have to wait a little to see how these ties play out, but when will we know?

Would it be harsh to suggest that we’ve actually had a relatively uneventful couple of weeks in the Champions League by its own high standards? With the obvious exception of that Real Madrid vs Liverpool tie, obviously.

You’ll know this already – but just in case you don’t – things were looking rosy for the Reds early on as Thibaut Courtois gifted Mohammed Salah a goal with a big ribbon on it after Darwin Nuñez had already put Jürgen Klopp’s men in front. Real Madrid aren’t averse to a comeback, of course, but this was a cracker even by their standards. Doubles for Vinícius Júnior and Karim Benzema in a 5-2 win means the tie looks to be pretty much over, which even Klopp conceded himself.

There were few fireworks elsewhere though, with none of the other seven first legs producing more than two goals. Benfica and Napoli, having both won 2-0 away from home, look to be in a strong position to qualify for the last eight and you would also expect home advantage to see Manchester City through. PSG, meanwhile, have the individual talent to win in Munich but recent form suggests they have absolutely no chance of doing so.

As previously mentioned, the following two rounds of the 2022-23 Champions League will contain two-legged ties which are played in back-to-back midweeks.
