When could Real Madrid win LaLiga and how many points do they need?

Carlo Ancelotti’s team are on the cusp of winning LaLiga, there is a remote chance they could be crowned champions, at the earliest on Sunday.

Wednesday’s 1-3 win at Osasuna enabled Real Madrid to take a step closer to clinching the 2021/22 LaLiga title. Carlo Ancelotti’s team could be crowned champions, at the earliest, on Sunday night, although that will depend on how other results go.

The most likely scenario however, is that they will lift the trophy, the club’s 35th, either the following week, at home to Espanyol or in their next game, against Atleti at the Wanda Metropolitano. If Barça win their two games in hand, Madrid would need to get a draw at least against Espanyol to clinch the league.

We take a look at how the title race could pan out over the next fortnight.

If Barcelona lose to Real Sociedad in San Sebastián on Thursday, they would need to beat Rayo on Sunday to delay Madrid from winning the title. Atleti dropped points against Granada on Wednesday and Madrid’s win at El Sadar means that Sevilla, who can collect a possible 18 points from their remaining matches, are no longer mathematically able to be champions.

Sunday 24 April

Week 21 (postponed) Barcelona - Rayo Vallecano. 21:00 CEST

Madrid are not in action this weekend due to the Copa del Rey final (between Betis and Valencia) but Barcelona will play their rescheduled Week 21 game against Rayo. If Barça lose to La Real and Rayo, Madrid will be declared champions without even having to play. That option would appeal to many madridistas as it would oblige Atlético to perform the guard of honour before the Madrid derby the following week... Madrid will still be on 78 points on Sunday; depending on what happens on Thursday, Barça could be on 63 if they beat La Real, 61 if they draw or 60 if they lose in Donosti. Defeat to La Real and Rayo would leave them on 60 points, and effectively hand the title to Real Madrid.

Sunday 1 May

If Xavi’s team win both of their games in hand, Madrid will have to put their title celebrations on hold  until the following weekend at the earliest.

Madrid could be crowned champions if they beat Espanyol on Saturday 30 April and Barcelona lose to Mallorca the following day. If Madrid lose and Barça win the next three games, the distance would be 12 points with 12 points left in play.

Sunday 8 May

Ancelotti’s team would only require a draw against Espanyol to give themselves a chance of lifting the title at Atlético’s ground in the derby on Sunday 8 May. They would need to go into that game with an advantage of 10, 11 or 12 points over their nearest rival - providing they haven’t wrapped up the title before then.

By the time the derby comes around, Atlético’s slim title hopes could already be over. If Madrid beat Espanyol and win at the Wanda, they will be crowned champions regardless of what their rivals do.

Wednesday 11 May

In the event of Madrid losing to both Espanyol and Atleti - and Barcelona winning their next three games (Real Sociedad, Rayo and Mallorca), the distance would be nine points with nine left in play. That would leave Madrid needing just a point from the Week 36 game against Levante at the Bernabéu.

Sunday 15th May

Madrid’s title quest is highly unlikely to be dragged out to mid-May, but if they suffer three straight defeats, it will be down to getting a result away at Cádiz in the penultimate game of the season. But considering Los Blancos have only lost three games all season, it’s difficult, if not impossible to see them entering into freefall now.
