On matchday one of the new-look Champions League, Real Madrid begin the defence of their European title at home to Germans VfB Stuttgart, who are back in the continent’s top club competition after over a decade away.

It’s a game that you’ll be able to stream live on fubo.

How does the new UCL format work?

Starting this season, UEFA has dispensed with the round-robin format in the Champions League, instead introducing a league phase in which each team plays eight games (four at home, four away) against eight different clubs. Rather than being placed in groups of four, all clubs will be ranked in one 36-team table.

After eight games, the top eight teams in the league phase will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the clubs ranked ninth to 24th will have to negotiate a playoff round to reach the knockout stage proper.

Can Real Madrid defend Champions League?

After winning a record-extending 15th European title by beating Borussia Dortmund in last season’s final at Wembley, Madrid will now attempt to become the first club to retain the Champions League since they themselves won three straight continental crowns in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Stuttgart were last in the Champions League in 2009/10, when Die Roten were knocked out by Madrid’s arch rivals, Barcelona, in the round of 16.

What time does Real Madrid vs Stuttgart start?

The Champions League matchday-one clash between Real Madrid and VfB Stuttgart will be played at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday September 17, 2024. It’s scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m. ET/12 noon PT.
