Where is USMNT in the FIFA rankings?

The United States Men’s National Team kept their place at number 11 in the FIFA rankings after picking up a win and a loss in the recent October international break.

USMNT were beaten 3-1 by Germany before a resounding 4-0 victory over Ghana. As co-hosts Greg Berhalter’s side are not required to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, so both games were friendlies.

The United States have remained just outside of the top ten in recent iterations of the rankings, but have made fairly constant progress since slipping to number 36 in 2017. The team’s best-ever placing came in 2006 when they were briefly ranked as the four-best international side on the planet.

As it stands USMNT are just behind Croatia and one place ahead of 2026 co-hosts Mexico.

Jozy Altidore compares current crop to 2014 team

Given the quality of Berhalter’s squad, expectations are high for USMNT at the 2026 World Cup. In the victory over Ghana they fielded a fluid front four of Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Timothy Weah and Folarin Balogun.

With the majority of the squad now playing for top European sides some have suggested that this is the most talented group of players in the history of the men’s national team.

However former US international Jozy Altidore has argued that the USMNT that he was a part of would beat the 2023 iteration. Speaking on CBS Sports, Altidore was asked whether the 2014 side was better than the current crop.

“Better is a weird word,” he said. “More complete, I would say our generation in terms of just position from position. Better talent-wise, individually, I would say this one now, but not everywhere.”

“If the two sides played each other at full strength, I think ours would win,” Altidore added.

The 2014 team was tipped for big things at the World Cup in Brazil but were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage. USMNT will be under pressure to beat that on home soil in 2026.
