A remarkable first season in England saw striker Erling Haaland help Manchester City win the treble under Pep Guardiola in 2022-23.

The Norwegian set a new Premier League record by scoring 36 goals in his first campaign with the club, however, a foot injury this season has seen him spend time on the sidelines as City compete on several fronts.

Despite his latest injury setback, Haaland remains the top scorer in the Premier League with 14 goals, and according to Opta, he has scored the most goals in Europe’s top five leagues in all competitions in 2023.

Haaland ahead of Kane

Haaland has found the back of the net 44 times in 2023, scoring one more goal than England striker Harry Kane, who is in second place with 43 goals to his name.

Kane has enjoyed an excellent 2023, a year that saw him make the move from Tottenham to German giants Bayern Munich. Kane has hit the ground running at the Allianz Arena and is the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 21 goals.

Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Kylian Mbappé has scored 42 goals in 2023 and is therefore only two off Haaland at the top of the list.

Mbappé won the 2022-23 Ligue 1 title alongside Lionel Messi at PSG, before the Argentine forward made the move to the United States to join MLS side Inter Miami.

Martínez and Salah

Fellow World Cup winner Lautaro Martínez is in fourth place, with a total of 37 goals for Inter, who lost to Haaland and Manchester City in the Champions League final in June.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah sits in fifth place, scoring 30 times this year for the Merseyside club. He remains Jurgen Klopp’s key man in attack but is set to miss several upcoming club games due to the Africa Cup of Nations, where he will feature for Egypt.
