On Monday night, Lionel Messi won The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award for the second time for his outstanding performances in 2022, a year in which he won three trophies: the World Cup and the Finalissima with Argentina, along with Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain. The former Barcelona star gathered the highest number of votes from national team coaches and captains, as well one journalist from each and every one of the national associations which are FIFA members.

Representatives of the Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) were, of course, amongst those to cast their vote. El Tri captain Héctor Moreno picked Messi as his number one (for which he was awarded five points), followed by Kylian Mbappé (three points) and Benzema (one point). Following the departure of ex-Mexico boss Gerardo Martino, the sporting director of the various Mexican national teams, Jaime Ordiales, stepped in for the ‘head coach’ vote, opting for Mbappé ahead of Messi and then Neymar.

Monterrery defender Moreno, who featured at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, chose Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who won both the Champions League and LaLiga, as his coach of the year, with Argentina boss and eventual winner Lionel Scaloni second ahead of Pep Guadriola, who won the Premier League with Manchester City. Ordiales, meanwhile, selected World Cup winner Scaloni as his top boss ahead of Guadriola and Ancelotti.

The pair agreed on who ‘The Best’ goalkeeper was but didn’t select the man who took the award, the controversial Emiliano Martínez. Both Moreno and Ordiales picked Thibaut Courtois as their number one, with the former having Martínez and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker second and third respectively, and the latter choosing Alisson second, followed by Yassine Bounou of Morocco and Sevilla in third.

Who voted for Mexico in The Best FIFA Women’s Awards?

Kenti Robles and Pedro López were responsible for casting the Mexican votes on the women’s side. Real Madrid full-back Robles went for Norwegian attacker Ada Hegerberg as her number one ahead of Australian Sam Kerr in second and Vivianne Miedema of the Netherlands in third. Spanish coach López had compatriots Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas at one and two respectively, followed by England’s Keira Walsh in third.

As for the goalkeeping gong, Robles’ top choice was Lyon’s Chilean shot-stopper Christiane Endler, with Ann-Katrin Berger and Mary Earps following behind. López, meanwhile, again picked a Spaniard - Barcelona’s Sandra Paños García-Villamil - in first place ahead of Endler and Berger.

Finally, in the ‘Best Coach’ category, Robles gave the nod to Lyon’s Champions League-winning coach Sonia Bompastor, followed by Sarina Wiegman and Brazil’s Pia Sundhage. The Tri head coach finished off his votes by picking eventual winner Wiegman, who lifted the European Championship with England, as number one ahead of Chelsea boss Emma Hayes and Sundhage.
