Maurizio Mariani will referee the USMNT’s Copa América opener today, as Gregg Berhalter’s men begin their campaign with a clash against Bolivia at AT&T Stadium.

The tournament hosts have been drawn in Group C, together with the Bolivians, Panama and Uruguay.

Who is Maurizio Mariani?

Mariani is the only European referee at the 2024 Copa América. The Italian has been included among the competition’s officials as part of a cooperation agreement between CONMEBOL and UEFA, the governing bodies of soccer in South America and Europe, respectively. The agreement also saw UEFA select the Argentinian referee Facundo Tello for the 2024 European Championship, which is currently being held in Germany.

Mariani has been a referee in Serie A, the top flight of Italian men’s league soccer, since 2013. The 42-year-old made his debut in the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s elite men’s club competition, in 2022/23, and has also overseen games in the second-tier UEFA Europa League. At international level, his resumé includes UEFA Nations League fixtures, as well as appointments to European Championship and World Cup qualifiers. He is yet to referee at the finals of either major tournament.
