Portugal return to World Cup action on Monday as they take on Uruguay in Group H. The official appointed by FIFA to referee the second round match at the Lusail Stadium is Alireza Faghani, who worked at four matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The 44-year-old officiated the clash between Argentina and France in the round of 16 in Kazan, a fixture that ended in a 4-3 win for Les Bleus, who would eventually go on to win the tournament.

Faghani took charge of Brazil’s 2-0 win over Serbia in Group G on Thursday. On Monday, he will be assisted on the sidelines by his compatriots Mohammadreza Mansouri and Mohammadreza Abolfazli, with Qatar’s Abdulrahman Al Jassim as the fourth official. The VAR will be managed by Qatar’s Abdulla Al-Marri, assisted by Australia’s Shaun Evans and Anton Shchetinin and Morocco’s Redouane Jiyed.

Who is Alireza Faghani, referee for Portugal vs Uruguay?

The Kashmar-born Alireza Faghani has been an international referee since 2008, although his first match at that level came a year later, on 16 April 2009, when he was in charge of the match between the Maldives and the Fiji Islands. Before becoming a referee, he played in the third level of the Iranian league and then decided to follow in his father Mohammed’s footsteps in refereeing.
