We’re into the final day of the group stage at the 2022 World Cup and two names are still need to complete the round of 16 line-up. One of those comes from Group H, with Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea all in with a chance. The Asian side face already-qualified Portugal on Friday, and will be hoping to get the rub of the green against the talented Europeans who some people believe have an outside chance of going all the way in the competition.

Getting the ‘rub of the green’ often just means that refereeing decisions go your way. So let’s have a look at who will be taking charge of this crucial match at the Education City Stadium, 10am ET.

South Korea vs Portugal: who is Facunda Tello?

The man in the middle of this clash is Facunda Tello, the 40-year-old official from Argentina who has been on the FIFA international books since 2019. He clearly impressed back home and was promoted to the Primera Division following just four matches in the lower tier, and then moved onto the global stage.

Tello made headlines around the sporting press when he handed out 10 red cards in one game. This was as a result of a big fight that ensured during the Champions Trophy final in Argentina, when tempers flared between Racing and Boca.

Assisting Tello in the South Korea-Portugal game will be compatriots Ezequiel Brailovsky and Gabriel Chade, while Senegal’s Maguette N’Diaye will be the fourth official.

South Korea vs Portugal: who is the VAR?

The modern importance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been witnessed in several games already in this tournament and for this game it will be the Colombian Nicolás Gallo in the box. His assistant will be Juan Soto, also from Colombia.

Brazil’s Bruno Boschilia will be the offside VAR, and Armando Villarreal of the United States will be the support VAR.
