López, 43, will be the man in the middle as the US visit Trinidad & Tobago in the second leg of the teams’ CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final.
Guatemala’s Walter López will referee the USMNT’s 2023/24 CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final second leg against Trinidad & Tobago, as the Americans look to continue their bid for a third straight tournament title. The USMNT travel to Port of Spain with a significant lead, having won 3-0 in Thursday’s first leg in Austin, Texas.
CNL finals, Copa América place at stake
The winners of the last-eight tie will not only progress to March’s Nations League finals, but will also clinch automatic qualification for next summer’s Copa América, which is to be hosted by the US. The losers, meanwhile, will head into a play-in tournament for one of CONCACAF’s two remaining Copa América spots.
Who is match referee Walter López?
López has been a top-flight referee in his native Guatemala since 2003, and was added to FIFA’s international list three years later. During his two-decade career in domestic soccer, the 43-year-old has been entrusted with several Guatemalan league finals. Most recently, he took charge of the second leg of Guastatoya’s win over Municipal in the Apertura 2020 championship decider.
In the continental club game, López’s most significant assignment to date is June’s 2023 CONCACAF Champions League final, which featured a team from the US. He oversaw the first leg in Mexico as Club León beat MLS champions Los Angeles FC 2-1, on their way to securing their first ever CONCACAF crown.
López also has experience of officiating an intercontinental final: in December 2014, he refereed Real Madrid’s 2-0 FIFA Club World Cup triumph over San Lorenzo in Marrakech, Morocco.
In international soccer, the Guatemalan’s biggest game so far is the 2017 Gold Cup final - another match with American involvement. Jozy Altidore and Jordan Morris were on target in Santa Clara, California, as the USMNT claimed the sixth of their seven Gold Cup titles with a 2-1 victory over Jamaica.

López’s assistant referees will be Nicaragua’s Keytzel Corrales and the Dominican Republic’s Raymundo Feliz. The fourth official in Trinidad & Tobago will be the Panamanian Oliver Vergara.
