Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Manchester United after a string of poor results has left them languishing in the middle of the Premier League table.

The Dutchman has failed to turn his squad into a successful side in England’s top division, and now it seems that the board, led by new owner Jim Ratcliffe, have had enough and are seeking other options to take the squad forward.

Gareth Southgate

The ex-England manager could take over as boss of Manchester United after leading England to their most succesful period since the 1960s.

Southgate, a former defender, took over an England side who had repeatedly disappointed in international tournaments and turned things around, taking them to the latter stages of World Cups and Euros competitions.

Xavi Hernández

Spanish manager Xavi Hernández was recently linked with the job at Old Trafford after leaving Barcelona earlier in the year. The ex-midfielder was a legend at the Catalan club and won a league title in his first season.

However, the second campaign was more of a struggle and Xavi’s methods were not seeing results on the pitch, with the tumultuous club ultimately going for Hansi Flick in his place.

Ruud van Nistelrooy

The assistant coach will take over the side in ten Hag‘s immediate absence and the Dutchman’s advantage is that he knows the squad, the club and the atmosphere around Old Trafford, where expectations are always high.

However, van Nistelrooy has little experience as a coach and has not taken control of a top side in elite football, meaning that this option, while safe in some respects, would certainly count as a gamble for Manchester United who are desperate to be taken seriously in the Premier League once again.
