Premier League

Why are there only seven Premier League matches this weekend and none on Sunday?

The 2025-26 Premier League has reached boiling point, but only 14 of 20 teams will be in league action between Friday and Monday.

Update:

The 2025-26 Premier League season has reached boiling point, with a nerve-wracking stretch of fixtures set to decide whether Manchester City or Arsenal lift the title, which teams qualify for the Champions League, and whether Tottenham Hotspur can avoid a shock relegation fight.

But even with the league hanging on a knife-edge, it must share the spotlight this weekend with the FA Cup semifinals, leaving a reduced Premier League schedule across Matchday 34.

Reduced Premier League schedule as FA Cup takes over

Only seven Premier League fixtures will be played across the weekend, starting with Sunderland’s clash against Nottingham Forest on Friday, April 24, and ending with Manchester United hosting Brentford on Monday, April 27.

In between, there are five additional games, including Tottenham’s visit to already-relegated Wolves and title-chasing Arsenal’s home matchup against Newcastle.

Unusually, there will be no Premier League games on Sunday.

FA Cup semifinals at Wembley

With three Premier League clubs, Manchester City, Chelsea and Leeds United, reaching the FA Cup semifinals, there are three fewer top-flight games taking place this weekend.

City face Championship side Southampton in the first semifinal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (12:15 p.m. ET), followed by Chelsea against Leeds on Sunday (10 a.m. ET).

The Chelsea vs. Leeds clash will be one of only two high-profile men’s matches played in England on Sunday, the other being a Championship meeting between Coventry, who have already secured promotion to the Premier League, and playoff hopefuls Wrexham.

Why some Premier League games were played early

If you are wondering when City, Chelsea and Leeds will make up their missed league fixtures, the answer is they already have.

Their Matchday 34 fixtures were moved forward to earlier this week to accommodate the FA Cup schedule, leaving Manchester City’s home clash with Crystal Palace as the only remaining fixture still to be scheduled before the end of the season.
