Club América are sweating on the fitness of midfielder Diego Valdés as they prepare for the Apertura 2023 playoffs.

Valdés returning from injury suffered on Chile duty

Having finished top of the regular-season standings, América head into the postseason as one of the title favourites, but it remains unclear what role Valdés, who is one of Las Águilas’ key men, will be able to play in the quarter-final first leg against Club León.

According to TUDN journalist Julio Ibañez, América head coach André Jardine is yet to decide whether to start the Chilean international, who missed most of the second half of the regular season.

Valdés hasn’t played in a competitive fixture since injuring his calf in Chile’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Venezuela in mid-October.

América opting for cautious approach

The 29-year-old has appeared in friendly matches held by América since the regular season concluded earlier in November, but the 13-time Mexican champions are said to be reluctant to rush him back into competitive action.

It therefore seems likely that Valdés will be named among the substitutes against León.
