Co-hosts Canada produced one of the performances of the tournament so far, thrashing Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also got on the scoresheet as Canada claimed its first-ever men’s World Cup victory. The result was slightly overshadowed by a serious-looking injury to Ismaël Koné, but it sent the hosts to the top of the group on goal difference.

Switzerland kept pace later in the day with a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Super-sub Johan Manzambi scored twice after coming off the bench, while Granit Xhaka added a late penalty as the Swiss took full advantage of a Bosnian red card.

With one round remaining, Canada and Switzerland sit on four points and control their own destiny. Bosnia and Qatar both have a single point and now need help to reach the knockout stage. The final matchday sees Canada face Switzerland in a winner-takes-first showdown, while Bosnia and Qatar meet in what is effectively an elimination game.

What happened in Group B Matchday 1?

Qatar and Switzerland played out a 1-1 draw to complete the first round of matches in Group B on Saturday. The Swiss were on course for a victory that would have placed them top of the group but were denied three points when Miro Muheim turned the ball into his own net four minutes into stoppage-time.

On Friday, co-hosts Canada were in action on Friday and had to come from behind to snatch a point in their opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The results leave all four teams in Group B exactly where they started - level pegging going into the second round of matches. All four have one point each and the same goal difference in the most open, evenly-balanced group in the tournament.
