Donald Trump to be handed unprecedented role in World Cup 2026 final
The president of the United States has been accused before of pushing himself to the spotlight at the expense of others.

A report from the UK suggests FIFA is considering an unprecedented role for the U.S. president during soccer’s biggest celebration.
The relationship between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump is back in the spotlight with just over a month remaining before the 2026 World Cup final. According to a report by journalist Ben Jacobs via TalkSport, Trump is expected to be present for the trophy presentation ceremony on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
The report claims that Trump would share the stage with Infantino during the postgame festivities and play a direct role in handing the trophy to the tournament winner. Such a move would place the U.S. president at the center of one of the most iconic moments in global sports.
Trump could remain on stage during the champions’ celebrations
The controversy intensified after reports suggested Trump may not only present the trophy but also be allowed to stay on stage during the winning team’s celebrations. Traditionally, once the captain receives the World Cup trophy, officials and dignitaries leave the podium so players can enjoy the moment alone.
Sources close to the White House reportedly told the outlet that FIFA’s leadership would like Trump to take an active role in the ceremony. There is even the possibility that he could remain alongside players as they lift the trophy in front of a worldwide audience.

Fans question Infantino’s closeness to Trump
The situation has drawn comparisons to the Club World Cup final, when Trump remained with Chelsea players during their title celebration. That scene generated mixed reactions among fans and pundits, with some questioning whether political figures should occupy such a prominent place during a sporting triumph.
With the World Cup final approaching, the possibility of a similar scene on soccer’s biggest stage is already fueling debate among supporters, particularly given the close public relationship that has developed between Infantino and the U.S. president.
