Update:

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has already enjoyed one of the stories of the 2026 World Cup. Now, the man who inspired his country’s historic 0-0 draw against Spain has another reason to celebrate.

The U.S. State Department and FIFA have helped clear the way for his mother, Ana Candida Évora, to travel to the United States and watch her son play at the tournament after she was unable to attend Cape Verde’s opening match because of visa-related complications and costs.

The news was confirmed by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who revealed that he had spoken directly with Secretary of State Marco Rubio following Vozinha’s emotional comments after the draw with Spain.

“Upon learning of this development, I spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and asked the State Department to do everything in their power to ensure that his mother can attend Cabo Verde’s next match,” Jeffries said in a statement.

“It is a privilege to announce that Vozinha’s mom will be able to secure a visa in time to attend their game this Sunday against Uruguay. All fees have been waived consistent with official policy. Travel arrangements are now being made for mother and son to reunite in Miami.”

Jeffries added that he wanted to thank Rubio, State Department officials, the government of Cape Verde and FIFA “for working together to make this possible.”

Why everyone is talking about Vozinha

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, whose full name is Josimar Dias, became one of the breakout stars of the tournament after producing a remarkable display against Spain in Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup match. The Blue Sharks frustrated the European giants to earn a famous goalless draw in Atlanta and collect a point in Group H.

After the match, Vozinha fought back tears while explaining that his mother had been unable to travel to witness the biggest moment of his career.

“She couldn’t come because of the visa issue... the money we had to pay. We didn’t manage it in time and I would have liked her to be here,” the goalkeeper said.

His comments quickly spread around the world and prompted calls for help from politicians, fans and media outlets.

Vozinha’s visa issue

Cape Verde is among the countries whose citizens can face a refundable bond requirement of up to $15,000 in addition to standard visa costs when traveling to the United States. While the U.S. government later announced exemptions for World Cup-related travel, the expense and timing had already prevented Vozinha’s mother from making the trip for the Spain game.

The State Department subsequently said it was working with the family to facilitate the necessary travel documentation, and Jeffries’ announcement now confirms she will be able to attend Cape Verde’s next match.

A crucial Group H showdown

Cape Verde sit on one point in Group H after their draw with Spain. The group’s other opening match saw Uruguay and Saudi Arabia play out a 1-1 draw, leaving all four teams on just a single point heading into the second round of fixtures.

Vozinha and Cape Verde will face Uruguay on Sunday, June 21, at 6 p.m. ET in Miami, with his mother expected to be in the stands to witness the occasion in person.
