How did Mexico fare the last time it hosted a World Cup? The results of El Tri as hosts that inspire optimism

The long-awaited opening game of the 2026 World Cup is almost here, and will mark one of the most historic moments for Mexican soccer. The Mexican national team will face South Africa on June 11 at the legendary Estadio Azteca, now officially known as Estadio Ciudad de México.

The venue in the capital will become the first stadium to host opening games at three different World Cups, after serving as a main venue at Mexico 1970 and Mexico 1986, cementing its place as one of the most iconic stages in soccer history.

The ceremony will begin before kickoff

The game between Mexico and South Africa will kick off at 3 p.m. ET, although fan activities will begin much earlier. Stadium gates are expected to open around four hours before the game.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at around 1:30 p.m. ET, 90 minutes before kickoff. Fans will also be able to enjoy World Cup 2026-themed activities, interactive experiences and special events around the stadium.

Mexico will aim to repeat its best World Cup run

Curiously, although it often happens, Mexico’s best World Cup performances came when the country was the host. In both 1970 and 1986, El Tri reached the quarterfinals, a feat it will try to repeat – or even surpass – in this new edition.

At the 1970 World Cup, Mexico advanced beyond the group stage for the first time after going unbeaten at the Estadio Azteca. The team drew with the Soviet Union, thrashed El Salvador and beat Belgium before being eliminated by Italy in the quarterfinals.

Mexico 1986 produced an unforgettable generation

Sixteen years later, El Tri once again thrilled the whole country under Bora Milutinović. Mexico beat Belgium, drew with Paraguay and defeated Iraq in the group stage, before eliminating Bulgaria in the round of 16 with Manuel Negrete’s historic volley.
