Mauricio Pochettino: “Playing soccer is one thing, competing at the highest level is another”
The Argentine coach said he has repeatedly asked the U.S. players not to take things so lightly, because they must compete.

Mauricio Pochettino declared the USMNT ready for the 2026 World Cup as the Americans enter the final hours before their opening Group D clash against Paraguay. (Two teams that have an interesting story)
Speaking at his last press conference before the tournament begins for the United States, the Argentine coach reflected on what he sees as a key cultural difference in how soccer is approached in the country.
For Pochettino, enjoying the game and competing at the highest level are not the same thing – and he has spent much of his time with the national team trying to instill that distinction.
“Their culture is very joyful. They love playing soccer and having fun,” Pochettino said. “I often tell them: ‘Guys, playing soccer is one thing, competing at the highest level is another.’ They are two completely different concepts. They grew up in a culture that values performance and enjoyment.”

Pulisic available for Paraguay opener
One of the biggest selection questions heading into the match concerns captain Christian Pulisic. The AC Milan star has been managing fitness concerns in recent weeks, but Pochettino confirmed he is available.
The coach stopped short of guaranteeing Pulisic a place in the starting lineup, however, insisting a final decision would be made closer to kickoff.
“Chris is available for selection, and then we will decide whether he starts the game or remains on the bench.”
No hints about the starting XI
Pochettino also refused to reveal any details about the team he plans to send out against Paraguay.
Asked about his lineup, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager joked with reporters rather than offering any clues.
“If I tell you, you [the journalists] would tell them,” Pochettino quipped.
