Mexico given huge boost in FIFA rankings

The World Cup not only crowned a new champion but also reshaped the international soccer landscape. FIFA published its updated World Ranking on Monday, and one of the biggest movers was Mexico, which returned to the world’s top 10.

After its impressive World Cup campaign, Mexico climbed four places from the previous ranking to 10th with 1,754.30 points. The rise confirms the team’s progress on the international stage and marks its highest position in several years.

The jump is a direct reward for Mexico’s performances at the World Cup, where it recorded a series of impressive victories and earned enough ranking points to leapfrog several European nations that had entered the tournament above them.

The biggest change came at the top of the standings. Spain became the new world No. 1 with 1,995.88 points, replacing Argentina, which dropped to second on 1,970.37. France completes the podium, while England and Brazil round out the top five.

Morocco also continued its rise, climbing to sixth place. Portugal slipped two spots to seventh, while Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico complete the top 10.

One notable absentee from the top 10 is Norway. Erling Haaland’s side climbed an impressive 12 places, but after beginning the World Cup in 31st because of an unconvincing qualifying campaign, they now sit 19th in the rankings.

For the Mexican national team, the new ranking also brings a competitive advantage. Remaining among the world’s top 10 could prove crucial in future draws for major international tournaments, while also reinforcing the project that has taken shape since the squad’s generational transition.

The challenge now will be to stay there. The FIFA rankings reward consistency, and Mexico will face a series of competitive fixtures and high-profile friendlies as it looks to defend the points it earned during its memorable World Cup run.
