Mexico record breaker: Gutiérrez’s Ghana goal surpasses historic Herrera
Brian Gutiérrez made history in Mexico’s World Cup warm-up win over Ghana on Friday, beating a mark set by Héctor Herrera.

Mexico defeated Ghana 2-0 in Puebla on Friday, in a friendly where Javier Aguirre’s side still looked a long way from the lineup expected to take the field on June 11, in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
While the overall performance still raised some questions, El Tri got the job done in front of its fans and extended its unbeaten run to six matches in 2026.
After two draws in the March international break - against Portugal and Belgium - victory over the Ghanaians saw Mexico return to winning ways in the final stretch of its World Cup preparations.
Brian Gutiérrez’s goal sets a Mexico record
The defining moment of the match came just one minute and 25 seconds in, when Brian Gutiérrez gave the hosts an immediate lead at Estadio Cuauhtémoc. Capitalizing on a loose pass by Ghana’s goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, Gutiérrez fired a powerful, well-placed right-footed strike into the net.
With that finish, the Chivas Guadalajara midfielder recorded the fastest goal ever scored by El Tri against an African national team. Gutiérrez’s effort surpassed the mark set by Héctor Herrera, in a 2021 friendly against Nigeria.

Martínez also on the mark for Mexico
In the second half of Friday’s matchup with Ghana, Guillermo Martínez completed the scoring for Mexico, who now face Australia in Pasadena on May 30, in their penultimate World Cup tuneup. El Tri then complete their pre-tournament schedule against Serbia in Toluca on June 4, seven days before their Group A opener against South Africa.
