Mexico World Cup roster draws mixed reactions as pundits praise emotional reveal and debate key omissions
Mexico’s final 26-man World Cup roster sparked debate, with analysts weighing the selections and one notable absence.
The Mexican national team unveiled its highly anticipated 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, with the tournament set to kick off on June 11.
The announcement came through the team’s official social media channels in the form of a special video narrated by the voice of Roberto Gómez Bolaños, better known as “Chespirito,” adding an emotional touch to the reveal and surprising many fans.
As expected, the squad announcement quickly generated discussion among soccer analysts and media personalities, who dissected both the player selections and the creative presentation used to unveil them.
David Faitelson reacts to Javier Aguirre’s squad
David Faitelson shared his thoughts on Javier Aguirre’s final 26-man roster, describing the squad selection as one that arrived “without any major surprises” and largely free of controversy regarding the players chosen.
The veteran journalist did, however, argue that the call-up reflects what he described as “a lost era for Mexican soccer and the Mexican player,” referencing the challenges currently facing the sport in the country.
Faitelson also praised the announcement video, calling it “emotional, profound and inspiring,” particularly because of the use of Chespirito’s voice, and congratulated the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) on the production.
José Ramón Fernández highlights national identity
ESPN analyst José Ramón Fernández also weighed in on the final roster, emphasizing that the presentation video focused on identity, belonging and the support of millions of Mexicans behind El Tri.
According to Fernández, the message successfully connected the team with its fan base ahead of the biggest tournament in international soccer.
Raúl Orvañanos points to Charly Rodríguez as the biggest omission
Veteran commentator Raúl Orvañanos focused on the absence of Charly Rodríguez, who recently won a league title but was unable to secure a place in Aguirre’s final squad.
For Orvañanos, the Cruz Azul midfielder is the most surprising player left off the roster, noting that “in the end, it wasn’t enough for Charly Rodríguez to make the World Cup squad despite being a champion.”
Fernando Cevallos sees few surprises
FOX Sports analyst Fernando Cevallos said the final list contained few unexpected decisions, as most of the selections had already been anticipated in recent weeks.
Among the talking points was the inclusion of Alexis Vega and César Huerta, both of whom ultimately retained their places in Aguirre’s World Cup plans.
