If you’ve received a new card at home but are confused by the new number, take these steps to avoid being another victim.

New Medicare card with a different ID in the mail? How to know it’s not a scam

Getting a Medicare card in the mail that you notice has a different identification number could certainly be unsettling. And with scams targeting older Americans on the rise, many people immediately wonder whether the card is legitimate or whether someone is trying to steal their information. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
According to former Social Security insider Dr. Ed Weir, there have been reports of some Medicare beneficiaries receiving new cards after healthcare-related data exposures led officials to issue replacement Medicare numbers as a precaution.
That means a new card is not automatically a red flag.
Still, Weir makes it clear that you have to be really careful as scammers often try to take advantage of this type of confusion.
What to look out for in Medicare card scams
One warning sign in this process is any card or mailing that pushes you to scan a QR code or directs you to an unfamiliar website. If you are unsure where the card came from, do not scan anything or provide personal information.
So, if a new Medicare card arrives, Weir recommends keeping both the new card and your old one until you can verify the change. The easiest option may be to take both cards to your next doctor’s appointment. Medical providers can check the Medicare system and confirm whether the new beneficiary number is legitimate and linked to your account.
If you belong to a Medicare advocacy group or have access to benefits counselors, they may also be able to help verify the number before you begin using it.
The bottom line is simple: a new Medicare card does not necessarily mean fraud has occurred. But it also does not mean you should trust it blindly.
