With the World Cup drawing closer, thousands of people are desperately trying to secure a US visa from Mexico, which is why the US Consulate in Tijuana has stepped up its efforts so that most applicants can get an appointment before the tournament.

According to Christopher Teal, the US consul in that border city, express appointments have been activated so people planning to attend the soccer tournament can apply for a US visa.

The increased workload at the Tijuana consulate is expected to allow officials to assist around 1,000 applicants per day, which would bring major relief both for the consulate and for the people currently stuck on the waiting list for their visa.

A cosmopolitan consulate

It is worth remembering that Tijuana is home to the busiest border crossing in the world, which means many applicants are not even Mexican nationals. Thousands of foreign citizens arrive in Mexico in hopes of obtaining a US visa, and for that reason the consulate is trying to speed up processing ahead of the World Cup.

Although a US visa costs $185, the Visa Integrity Fee promoted by Donald Trump could push the total cost to around 8,000 Mexican pesos, since that charge, added to the original fee, could bring the final price to that level.
