Normally those that run the administration of a sport remain in the shadows, but that’s not been the case with the head of soccer.

Was FIFA president Gianni Infantino a professional soccer player?

As Gianni Infantino prepares to hand the World Cup trophy to either Spain or Argentina after Sunday’s 2026 final – with his new BFF, President Donald Trump at his side – he’ll once again be one of the most visible faces in global soccer.
Considering how closely he’s associated with the game, plenty of fans assume he must have enjoyed a professional playing career before moving into soccer politics.
Did Gianni Infantino ever play professional soccer?
No. Infantino went down this route, although he can still be found playing for fun.
Born in Brig, Switzerland, in 1970 to Italian immigrant parents, Infantino studied law at the University of Fribourg before beginning a career in sports administration.
His first major role came as secretary general of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), based at the University of Neuchâtel. That eventually led him to UEFA in 2000, where he rose through the organization by working in legal affairs, club licensing and governance.
By 2009 he had become UEFA secretary general, helping oversee Financial Fair Play regulations, the expansion of UEFA Euro 2016 to 24 teams and the development of the UEFA Nations League before successfully running for FIFA president in 2016.

Have any FIFA presidents been former professional players?
Maybe surprisingly, also no.
Although soccer has been governed by former players at national and continental level, FIFA itself has never elected a president who first became famous as a professional player.
Most have come from backgrounds in administration, law, refereeing or sports governance instead.
FIFA president and playing background
- Robert Guérin (1904-1906) – Amateur player and football administrator
- Daniel Burley Woolfall (1906-1918) – No known playing career
- Jules Rimet (1921-1954) – Amateur player
- Rodolphe Seeldrayers (1954-1955) – No known playing career
- Arthur Drewry (1955-1961) – No known playing career
- Sir Stanley Rous (1961-1974) – Amateur player before becoming an international referee
- João Havelange (1974-1998) – Olympic swimmer and water polo player, not a footballer
- Sepp Blatter (1998-2015) – Amateur/recreational player
- Gianni Infantino (2016-present) – Never played professionally; career football administrator
That makes Infantino not so much an exception than many fans might expect. While countless coaches, sporting directors and federation officials began as professional players, FIFA’s highest office has historically gone to administrators rather than former stars.
