Wrexham’s battle to secure promotion to the EFL (English Football League) has been avidly followed by fans of the club not only at the Racecourse Ground but all across the world as new legions of ‘Red Dragon’s supporters look to lap up new information on the team owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

According to data from Google Trends, in 2023, Wrexham AFC has generated a greater number of searches on Google than many traditional US sports teams with the Welsh club and owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney being more actively searched for as the 2022-23 season wore on.

Reynolds and McElhenney, key factors in Wrexham’s success in the US

The high level of popularity which Wrexham has experienced over the past two years is due to the arrival of new owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and this blossomed in August of last year with the release of the FX/Disney Plus documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. A new season of the hit series is expected later on in the year with much of the drama set to be dedicated to the battle to secure an automatic place to the fourth tier of English football and the dramatic battle with rivals Notts County.

Wrexham are now looking to capitalize on this new found interest in the US as they club prepare for a preseason tour of the US where they will face Chelsea, Manchester United and LA Galaxy II with bumper crowds expected to show up to see the likes of Paul Mullin, Ben Foster and the rest of the Wrexham heroes at close quarters.
