Youri Tielemans heading to Manchester United after club make last minute U-turn on Ederson
Manchester United are back in the Champions League after a two year absence and they are building a squad to compete in Europe and in England.
Manchester United are back in the Champions League after a couple years of fighting to get back into the top international club competition. Now they they are back in the UCL, it’s time to build a squad that will be ready to compete with the top clubs in Europe.
United revamping midfield
The Red Devils made their first move of the summer bringing Brazilian starlet Andrey Santos on a $55 million deal late last week. Now they are looking to beef up their midfield even more with a signing of another Premier League midfielder. According to Fabrizio Romano, United have agreed to pay nearly $47 million to Aston Villa for the rights to Youri Tielemens.
Tielemen’s just wrapped up a World Cup campaign in which he helped Belgium reach the quarterfinals and just fall short against a Spain side who is knocking on the door of the final. Tielemans scored two goals in five World Cup matches, both in the incredible 3-2 comeback win over Senegal in the round of 32.
The Belgian midfielder has been a big part of the successful run over the last three seasons at Villa Park. He grew up with Anderlecht before joining Monaco for a couple seasons. He made his Premier League move to Leicester City in 2018 and stayed there until 2023 before making the move to Aston Villa.
From a Villan to a Devil
He bids Aston Villa farewell after helping them win the Europa League title over Freiburg in May. He was also instrumental in Aston Villa’s top four finish in the Premier League that will see them play in the Champions League. After the agreement with United, he could be seeing his former club in the European competition this year.
The Tielemens deal popped up shortly after United took a U-turn on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who looked set to join the Red Devils. Talks broke down between Manchester United and the Italian side, and a last minute decision by those at Old Trafford saw the club make an offer to the Belgian and a deal struck shortly after.
United saw a massive turnaround under Michael Carrick who took over on the touchline in the middle of the season. He guided them to a top three finish and earned the permanent manager role once the season came to an end. There’s a feeling that the tides are turning in Manchester, and they will be hoping that Tielemens can help guide them into a new era at Old Trafford.
