Newcastle’s Champions League fate in their hands
Despite the well-publicised Saudi Arabian takeover of Newcastle United, did anyone really believe they would be playing in the Champions League next season? They’ve given themselves and excellent opportunity to do just that, aided by five wins in a row following a run of three consecutive defeats, which looked as if it might put paid to their top-four hopes.
Eddie Howe’s side were well beaten by Aston Villa last time out, however, which is not ideal preparation for what could prove to be their most crucial remaining fixture. A win over Spurs would move them six points clear of their opponents with a game in hand, although a loss would not only give encouragement to the Londoners, but also to surprise packages Aston Villa and Brighton, lurking just a few points behind.
Spurs still hopeful of breaking back into the top four
Spurs have been very inconsistent this season but have done enough to hang onto the coat tails of Manchester United and Newcastle, who are just ahead of them in the standings. The trip to St James’ Park represents the perfect opportunity to give their own Champions League hopes a boost, although they will remain behind the Magpies on goal difference if they win (unless by a ridiculous scoreline).
One potential issue for Cristian Stallini is his team’s poor recent away form. Tottenham’s last victory on the road came on 28 January against Championship side Preston North End and their last Premier League away win was five days prior to that against Fulham. Their last six away games have ended in four defeats in two draws, so something will have to drastically change if they are to end their difficult run in Newcastle.
