Sky Sport Italia journalist Alessandro Alciato has revealed on his Twitter account that Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with José Mourinho for the Portuguese to become the manager at Old Trafford next season, replacing Dutchman Louis van Gaal at the helm.

And ESPN say that the report has not been denied by the club, as would be the Red Devils' usual response, adding that United's executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, is scheduled for a meeting with the Premier League side's American owners, the Glazer family, to run the rule over the plans for the team's future.

ESPN also say that a source very close to Manchester United has told them that, according to a survey of fans, the former Chelsea supremo enjoys a high level of popularity among the United faithful, and that they see him as the only man capable of filling legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson's shoes.

Were Mourinho to take over at United, the Premier League would be the setting for the ex-Real Madrid boss to renew his Clásico rivalry with former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, whose appointment as Manchester City manager from the coming season was confirmed on Monday.
