Fernando Torres grabbed the winner as Atlético Madrid move back into second and kept up the pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona with a 1-0 victory over fellow capital outfit Getafe on Sunday.

With Barça thrashing Celta Vigo 6-1 at the Camp Nou later in the day, Los Rojiblancos' win leaves them three points behind the Spanish champions, who have a game in hand.

Torres got Atlético off to the perfect start at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, putting the away team ahead inside just two minutes.

Taking his place in an Atleti line-up in league football for the first time since the end of December, the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker was on hand to tap in Yannick Ferreira Carrasco's low cross at the far post.

The strike was his second in his past two top-flight appearances, having brought up his 100th goal for Atleti in last week's home triumph over Eibar.

Following the break, however, the visitors suffered an injury blow - with a Champions League first leg with PSV and a Madrid derby against Real coming up in the next two weeks - when they lost Carrasco to an ankle problem in the 54th minute.

The Belgium international was stretchered off, adding his name to a growing list of casualties, and after the match the club released a medical report stating that he had picked up a "grade II sprain of the external lateral ligament of the right ankle joint".

In a game of few chances, Atleti's Matías Kranevitter came on for his La Liga debut before Ángel Correa squandered a glorious opportunity for Diego Simeone's side to put the result beyond doubt in added time.

Through on goal, the Argentine unselfishly opted to square for Saúl Ñíguez - and saw his pass intercepted.

But there was to be no further change to the scoreline, as Los Colchoneros notched up a second straight league victory.
