VIOLENCE IN FOOTBALL

Cáceres players assaulted during brutal pitch invasion

Two Cáceres players were taken to hospital after being viciously assaulted by Córdoba fans and players during a brutal pitch invasion according to El Periódico de Extremadura.

Update:
The aftermath of Sunday's disgraceful scenes

Violence crept its ugly head over the weekend in the second tier of Spanish women’s football. According to El Periódico de Extremadura, a number of Cáceres players were assaulted following Sunday’s game with Naranjo and two had to be taken to hospital.

One of the victims spent 24 hours under medical observation due to the incident, although neither of those attacked suffered any serious injuries. Nerea, who is just 21 years old, spoke about what happened on the Córdoba pitch: “I was shocked. ‘Are they hitting me?’ I asked myself as I covered my head with my hands. They threw me to the ground. I was surrounded by six or seven of their players. One of my team-mates jumped in to protect me and ushered me to the dressing room”.

Cáceres are considering sending the Spanish Football Federation a report about Sunday’s events later today to demand that an example be made to condone the violence. The Extremadura-based club claims to have identified one of the attackers as a mother of one of the Naranjo players.

Cáceres filed a complaint after the game which included the following statement: “about 40 people ran onto the pitch and between 10 and 15 of them started to attack the players”. Some of the AD Naranjo players also got involved.
