Twitter sees Pique and Arbeloa exchange after Barça loss
Piqué and Arbeloa are upping the ante in their most recent social media discussion following Barça's defeat in Anoeta. The "culé" started after the 2-0 loss of Madrid in Wolfsburg and the Madridista fired back yesterday.
LaLiga is hotting up. Barça lost in Anoeta (1-0) leaving them three points better off than Atlético and four ahead of Madrid, a team they had a tweleve point advantage over very recently. But while the tired and disappointed faces of Barça players ended their game, they were a good 450km drive north of the capital, where Madrid's team had played, and won, only a few hours earlier. So, if the rival players wanted to commiserate or otherwise with their counterparts what were they to do? Oh yes, go public on social media.
It was after Madrid's 2-0 loss when they visited Wolfsburg on Tuesday that prompted FC Barcelona's Gerard Piqué to take to Twitter writing, "The Truth Hurts. What a great film! Will Smith is one of the greatest all time actors." (Note that in Spain - due to historical reasons that we won't get into at the moment - foreign film titles are often completely different. La Verdad Duele, or The Truth Hurts, is the name given to the 2015 release Concussion). So, Piqué may have been appreciating the Fresh Prince's portrayal of a pathologist...but some seem to believe he had alterior motives for his tweet.
We must remember that four days prior to that Champions League tie, Madrid had won at the Camp Nou, in what many believed was a relatively inisgnificant Clásico due to the gap Barça had at the top of the league ("decaffeinated" was the word being used in some sports offices!). Arbeloa kept his fingers still. The day after the Wolfsburg defeat, Barça and Atlético met in Catalonia with the home side ending victorious 2-1 but only after Fernando Torres had put his side one up and was then sent off. All this resulted in a tweet from Álvaro last night, "How difficult it is to win against 11 men! Great game from Illarramendi and the great Granero, promise kept!"
Well, this looks like it could just be the beginning of a very public feud between the two...and fans from both sides are jumping onboard to add their views. We think we'd rather sit back and watch from afar. Here are some examples:
"You were right. What a film, The Truth Hurts"
"The word for film has an accent. A hug" (Correcting his spelling of "peliculón")
"The same as "expulsión". Again you're right. A hug you phenomenon." ("expulsión" meaning a sending off)
And this feud is not only being played out on social media. In the mixed zone after the defeat to Real Sociedad, Piqué was asked his opinion on Arbeloa's "beating 11 men" comment to which he replied, "A player that has only started one game in 32 doesn't deserve an answer."
