Update content

A dramatic European night at the Sanchez Pizjuan saw the holders make it through to the semi-final draw after overcoming a brave fightback from Athletic Club. A cagey first 45 minutes saw little in terms of goal scoring chances as Sevilla shaded the half with more possession.

Athletic, realizing that they had to take the game to their hosts brought on Iker Munain and the 23 year old made an instant impression giving the Basque side the incision they had been lacking. Aduriz opened the scoring just before the hour mark when his tame shot was fumbled by Soria in the Sevilla goal. Valverde's side had barely time to celebrate before Sevilla were level as Kevin Gameiro slotted home. Unai Emery's side sat deep and invited Athletic to push on and the visitors were rewarded for the persistence as a perfect Beñat delivery found an unmarked Raul Garcia who saw his looping header nestle in the Sevilla net.

Athletic pushed as the game moved into extra game and the nerves from the Sanchez Pizjuan faithful were clearly translated to the home side as Athletic despite dominating the encounter were unable to find a third goal. The dreaded penalty kicks were the only thing that could separate both sides after 210 minutes of football and an unspeakably poor spot kick from Beñat meant that Kevin Gameiro slotting home saw the holders march on into the next round. Athletic's night of sorrow was further compounded with Aritz Aduriz limping off with a hamstring injury. It's going to be a long night for the red and white half of Seville with the infamous "Feria de Sevilla" taking place in the Andalusian capital this week.

How it happened:

Min 103 | Both teams really going for it and tired legs adding to the drama.

Min 101 | De Marcos booked and he'll miss the semi should the Basque side advance.

Min 100 | The Ukrainian to take..meanwhile Mariano off and Coke on. Freekick grazed onto the post. Nerves at the Pizjuan as San Jose stops the ball on his own line. The game is alive !

Min 97 | Spaces opening up with tired legs. Susaeta through, chips the keeper but the shot trickles wide, what a chance for the Basque side !

Min 96 | The Sanchez Pizjuan gets it's voice back as the fans rally behind the home side. Sevilla now the side on top.

Min 92 | Sevilla do have one change to make but it's the visitors looking the fresher of the two sides.

Min 89 | Corner for Athletic as they push on. The Basque side look more comfortable and the home side seem to be suffering from nerves as the fans transmit a touch of anxiety.

Min 81 - Sevilla 1-2 Athletic (3-3 agg)

Min 80 | Scratch that. Raul Garcia scores a looping header. Game on ! Tie on !

Min 79 | 50/50 in terms of possession but it's Sevilla that will be in the hat (or bowl) for tomorrow's draw.

Min 76 | Face of frustration form Aduriz on the bench. Seemed to be able to walk off from the pitch which suggests that it's not a complete rupture but a grade 2/3 tear. (3/4 weeks out of action potentially). Bad news for Valverde but good for Del Bosque.

Min 75 | Two quick chances for Sevilla as Gameiro and then Nzonzi go close (left footed shot from the French man) and a header from Steven Nzonzi.

Min 74 | 16 minutes for Athletic to bag that goal that will see extra time. Still generating plenty of patient build up play but losing Aduriz  means they are without their goal scoring reference and talisman.

Min 71 | Viguera comes on for the Athletic No. 20.

Min 70 | Bad, bad. bad news for Athletic. Aduriz calling for a change as seems to have a problem with his left hamstring muscle.

Min 53 | Munain set to enter the fray for Athletic. Valverde could do with a night of his magic as the Sevilla defence stands resolutely.

Min 49 | Athletic certainly lacking the velocity and drive that Iñaki Williams offers.

Min 48 | Iborra strikes and palmed away by Herrerin. good early chance for the home side.

Min 46 | We're underway again. Sevilla start and no changes at the interval.

As it stand in the other ties also being played tonight...looking good for the draw tomorrow are Villarreal (0-3) ahead v Sparta Prague, Dortmund 0-2 up at Anfield and Shakhtar winning 2-0 vs. Portuguese side Sporting Braga. It's advantage Seville with their 1-2 win at San Mames so imperative that the Lions get this goal to add some frisson to the tie.

Min 41 | Sevilla 5-4 ahead on corners for those stats fans out there !

Min 40 | Into the last 5 minutes of the half and despite their recent domination, nothing resembling a clear cut chance from Athletic.

Min 39 | Sevilla failing to link up with their front line as Athletic start to dominate proceedings.

Min 36 | De Marcos basically shoves Escdero out of the way as if he doesn't exist. Slovenian ref calls a foul. Sevilla missing the midfield security that Banega provides.

Min 34 | Good spell of pressure from Valverde's side as they look to the flanks to try and break past the Sevilla back line. Raul Garcia and Susaeta looking busy in the past 5 minutes.

Min 32 | Ball falls to Raul Garcia and the Athletic player fails to keep his volley down and skies the ball over the bar. Decent chance for the Basque side who need this away goal that could assist in turning tie back in their direction.

Min 30 | Sevilla 0-0 Athletic (Sevilla 2-1 on agg.) Sevilla 57% v 43% Athletic (possession).

Min 28 | Yellow card for Boveda after delightful play from Escudero. The Athletic right back just a tad slow to keep up with the skills of the Sevilla No. 18. Resulting free kick tipped away for a corner.

Min 24 | Sweet volley from Dane, Krohn Dehli but he shot is straight at Herrerin

Min 22 | Good news for fans of 'Los Leones' as Raul Garcia seems ok

Min 21 | Raul Garcia seems to have picked up a knock. not good news if it's serious for the visitors. Gameiro and Vitolo looking very lively for Sevilla tonight

Min 18 | Susaeta with a strike for the Basque side as the shot is deflected out for a corner. Krychowiak down receiving treatment as play is halted.

Min 15 | Sevilla 0-0 Athletic (Sevilla 2-1 on agg.)

Min 14 | Gameiro marginally offside as he manages to out run Athletic defender with surprising ease.

Min 13 | Scrappy passage of play as both sides fail to get any rhythm to their play. Long balls up to Aduriz seem to be Athletic's early game plan.

Min 10 | Rami almost strikes for Sevilla after the No. 3 volleys over after a delightful assist from Krohn-Dehli

Min 9 | Sevilla win a corner after a poor shot from Nzonzi which takes a wicked deflection.

Min 5 | Almost for Athletic as Aduriz skips into the area from a fine assist from Susaeta. Dangerous from the Basque side. Athletic win a corner.

Min 4 | Athletic yet to make a decent foray into the opposition half with the home side dominating these early proceedings

Min 2 | Claim for a penalty for the home side after the ball strikes Balenziaga, match official Mister Skomina says no !

Min 1 | Athletic kick off and we're under way

We're live in Seville as the teams make their way onto the Sanchez Pizjuan pitch.  A rousing rendition of the Seville club song belts out from the packed stadium. Preview

Spanish eye's are on Sevilla's Sanchez Pizjuan tonight as the all LaLiga tie between Sevlla and Athletic Club kicks off at 2105 (CET). Sevilla hold a sizable advantage following on from their 1-2 win at San Mames last Thursday with goals from Timothée Kolodziejczak and Iborra for Unai Emery's side.

Sevilla are without Tremoulinas and Ever Banega through injury whilst Valverde has also worrying injury concerns with Iñaki Williams not recovering after pulling up during Sunday's LaLiga game against Rayo. Laporte and Sabin Merino are the other absentees for the Basque side.

A fantastic atmosphere is guaranteed at the Pizjuan with the city of Seville immersed in its annual 'Feria' and convinced that a semi-final spot awaits Emery and his side in tomorrow's draw in Nyon.
