Fernando Torres spoke about his future with Spanish news agency EFE and recounted his famous winner against Germany in the EURO 2008 final as well as touching on his chances of being included in Vicente del Bosque's list for this summer's tournament.

“We went into EURO 2008 with the conviction that if we could do things as we knew, we could win it. There were a lot of doubts at the time - now everyone has jumped on the bandwagon but they have quickly forgotten what the general mood was back then; we got whistled in the friendlies running up to EURO 2008, Luis [Aragonés] suffered the most unfair and absurd criticism but that only united us even more. In that moment, when the goal went in, it made us see that it was possible. If we had lost, our whole world would have caved in, perhaps. A goal changed everything. It was a dream - to do something that no one had ever done. That image, one of Spain winning, was not in the minds of most people. But after that day people started talking about the possibility of winning the World Cup, being world champions. I don't know whether if 2008 hadn't happened,  the successes of 2010 and 2012 wouldn't have followed as they did. People don't want to see the low points we but look what happened”, Torres recalled.

The Atlético striker also said that he doesn't automatically expect to be in the Spain squad for next month's EURO 2016: “It's an issue which I don't really like talking about, because anything I say will get misinterpreted. I've never been a problem for the national team; for me, it's been a source of pride to represent my country and it's something which I guard deep inside. The evidence of that is that I have never left the national team. I'll always be delighted to go if I called, but it's been two years since my last call-up. I really hope I get called again in the future. I don't feel a part of the current group of players, two years have passed. So yes, being called up would be a surprise for me. We'll see what happens. But there's certainly no problem on my part. It would be difficult to have more commitment or dedication than I have”.
