Pelé, in Milan ahead of the Champions League final to present a new film about his life entitled “Pelé: the birth of a legend,” has said that in his opinion Leo Messi is the best active player on the planet, ahead of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo. “The best of them all is Messi. Leo is my favourite player. He has a completely different style to Cristiano. Neymar is also one of the most talented players, but each player is different to the other.”

Of current Brazil number 10 Neymar, Pelé noted: “He is a good player, but [Santos player in the 1950s] Vasconcelos was 10 times better.”

O Rei also opined that today’s football is a far cry from the free-flowing style of his day: “There are a lot of good players today, but they are very defensive.”

Asked which club he would play for in the modern era if he could choose, Pelé replied: “Barcelona, because they enjoy themselves when they play.”
