Spain captain, Iker Casillas, appears to have retired from international football after Euro 2016 with a message from Rambo II, asking for his country to love him like he loves it.

Spain captain Iker Casillas appears to have retired from the Spanish national side after Spain's 2-0 defeat to Italy dumped them out of Euro 2016. Casillas didn't play a single minute at the tournament, with Manchester United keeper De Gea now installed as the Spanish number one. 

Casillas posts Rambo message to indicate he's retiring

The former Real Madrid star, now at Porto, uploaded a message and the ending speech from Rambo II in what appeared to be a clear message that he was retiring from international football.

The goalkeeper posted: "So proud to feel the affection of the fans from #GraciasCasillas [a hashtag that was trending topic during much of Monday]. Today and always everyone with the Spain", along with the video from Rambo II in which the protaganist says goodbye to Colonel Trautman, asking only that his "country loves us as much as we love it".

Casillas: goalkeeper and captain of Spain's golden generation

Casillas will be saying goodbye to Spain after 171 caps. He was captain of the victorious side at Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, as well as the World Cup winning team of 2010.

Casillas, who made his debut in 2000 in a friendly against Sweden under José Antonio Camacho, will go into the history books as the goalkeeper and captain of the most successful generation of footballers in the history of Spanish football.
