Coentrao and Morata given 2016/17 Madrid squad numbers
There is no squad number for Marco Asesnio whilst Varane, Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez change their numbers.
Real Madrid revealed the squad numbers that the team will wear during the 2016/17 season with the surprise being no number assigned to Marco Asensio. Returning Fabio Coentrao and Álvaro Morata do however feature on the list of players who have been assigned a 16/17 squad number.
Everything points to a relatively quiet summer for Real Madrid on the transfer front with minimum amendments on the squad numbers compared to those of last season. Varane gives up his No. 2 shirt to Carvajal and selects the no. 5 shirt whilst Lucas Vázquez moves from No. 18 to 17 with Álvaro Arbeloa set to wear the 18 shirt.
Fabio Coentrao returns to the Bernabeu but a serious muscular injury has ruled him out of action through to November. The Portuguese defender has been assigned squad number 15. Varane is set to wear the coveted No. 5 shirt which in principal was to be left free for the possible acquisition of French player Paul Pogba. With Manchester United in pole position to secure the services of the Juventus midfielder the number has been allocated to Varane.
Álvaro Morata returns back to the club in which he spent his formative years as a footballer and has opted for the No. 21 shirt which he wore before departing for Serie A.
Another squad number which may be freed up in the near future is that of Nacho,(No. 6) who seems destined for a move to the Italian capital playing with AS Roma.
