Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos is looking at being out for six to eight weeks, and possibly longer, after suffering an avulsion fracture (where part of the bone is torn off, often under extreme tension from a tendon or ligament) to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.  Kroos sufferered the injury during Sunday's win over Leganés. The diagnosis was made in Germany, under the supervision of Real Madrid medical staff. The club have confirmed the injury on their website.

James missed two months with a similar injury, while Marcelo was kept out for three months. Probably the most famous metatarsal injury was David Beckham's back in 2002, which nearly prevented him from playing in the World Cup.

Kroos injured during Leganés match

Kroos did manage to finish the match against Leganés, despite having suffered the injury during the fiery encounter, with Leganés not holding back as they sought to get something at the Bernabéu.

Kroos has been standing in for Casemiro

The German midfielder has been standing in for Casemiro in the pivotal defensive midfield role, with the Brazilian out with a broken leg. Zidane said in Sunday that Casemiro was back running, but wasn't kicking a ball yet.

Kroos will miss the Madrid derby against Atlético and almost certainly the Clásico against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 3 December. In fact it is highly possible that Kroos won't play again in 2016.
