Iker Casillas will be celebrating Porto’s qualification to the Last 16 of the Champions League tonight, blissfully unaware that he has set yet another record in the tournament. This evening, Portothrashed Leicester 5-0 at the Dragão but both teams will be in Mondays draw for the first knockout stage – a round Casillas has played in during 17 editions of the Champions League – 16 times with his previous club, Real Madrid. The only time he has failed to make it into the last 16 was last year when Chelsea sent Porto out at the group stage and into the Europa League.
97 times a winner
The 35-year-old is the competition’s longest-serving campaigner, holding the appearances record – 165 (13 with Porto, 152 with Real Madrid) and he is the player to have toasted the most victories – 97 (including the preliminary 3rd round ties), snatching the record off Barça legend, Xavi Hernández. Tonight Iker also extended a record he has held for some time - the Champions League record for keeping a clean sheet, which he resets to 54.
