Ramos: Real Madrid man defiant over controversial celebration
Ex-Sevilla defender Sergio Ramos sparked anger in Thursday's cup clash by gesturing to a section of the home fans after scoring for Real.
Sergio Ramos' goal celebration was the focus of attention as the Real Madrid captain spoke to the media after Thursday's Copa del Rey draw with Sevilla.
Celebrates goal with controversial gestures
The Sevilla youth product, who left for Real in 2005, scored Los Blancos' second with a penalty as a 3-3 stalemate sealed a 6-3 aggregate win for the visitors.
Having received abuse from a group of hardcore home supporters throughout the game at the Sánchez Pizjuán, centre-back Ramos caused controversy by gesturing to the radical fans after netting with a 'Panenka'-style spot-kick (see photos).
Sergio Ramos' post-match remarks:
Disrespect: "At no point did I disrespect the Sevilla support. In fact, I apologised to the sections of the stadium that didn't insult me or shout abuse at me."
Reception: "I've been coming here for a number of years. Sevilla will always be my home club, regardless of whether I'm whistled. But I'm the Real captain and I look for the best for my team."
Celebration: "It doesn't [usually] occur to me to celebrate a goal at my home club, but when people shout things about your mother, they don't deserve respect. The Sevilla fans do [deserve respect], though. The president should take steps to stop a sector of the fans from tarnishing Sevilla's support."
Love for Sevilla: "That'll never change: the day I die I'll be buried with the flags of Real Madrid and Sevilla."
Treatment of other returning ex-Sevilla players: "I've seen the receptions for [Ivan] Rakitic and [Dani] Alves [...] and they're welcomed back like gods. With me, they insult my mother."
Were the Sevilla players upset? "I said sorry to [goalkeeper David] Soria; I told him that at no point was I disrespecting him. I'd like the reception to be different but it's not going to change."
