The atmosphere at Napoli could be cut with a knife after an escalating war of words between manager Maurizio Sarri and club president Aurelio de Laurentiis.
Sarri threatens to leave Napoli
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the spat started after Napoli drew with Palermo a few weeks ago, a result that left De Laurentiis fuming to the point of insulting his coach after the final whistle. The Italian daily stated that De Laurentiis was unhappy with the coach’s starting XI and that Sarri responded to the verbal barrage by saying he would quit at the end of the season. The club’s sporting director Cristiano Guintoli, in a show of solidarity, also intimated he would join Sarri through the exit door.
Napoli "frightened" in Madrid: De Laurentiis
In Madrid last week, the combustible Napoli president did little to smooth his coach’s ruffled feathers when he spoke to reporters after Napoli’s 3-1 defeat in the Bernabéu. De Laurentiis accused the team of being frightened and Sarri responded archly: “The president should talk to me and not to the television. In Castel Volturno I made the decisions.”
