Real Madrid thought they had taken the lead in the ninth minute in San Mamés when Carvajal played the Portuguese in but he was slightly ahead of the defence.
Real Madrid had the ball in the back of the net as early as the ninth minute in San Mamés but the linesman's flag was up swiftly to adjudge Cristiano Ronaldo offside.

Benzema opens the scoring
Karim Benzema started the move, releasing Carvajal round the back of the Athletic defence from where the Spain international fired in a cross for Ronaldo. The Frenchman opened the scoring himself in the 24th minute with a well-taken goal.
