As well as producing a fine all-round display, the Frenchman also opened the scoring with a smart first-half finish as Real secured a crucial 2-1 win.
And the 29-year-old was quick to acknowledge the role of Cristiano Ronaldo, who supplied the assist for his goal, in his successful afternoon's work.
Taking to social media following Madrid's victory at Nuevo San Mamés, Benzema posted an image of the pair celebrating, with the caption: "Kb9/Cr7".
Real Madrid five clear ahead of Barcelona-Valencia
The leaders' triumph in Bilbao, earned by a Casemiro winner after Aritz Aduriz had levelled for the hosts, saw them go provisionally five points clear of Barcelona.
