The president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, has confirmed that the German referee, Deniz Aytekin, who refereed Barcelona and PSG in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 would not be suspended.
"When something does not go well, we can discuss it, but it is not a question of suspensions. It would be like suspending or banishing a player who missed a penalty," he said regarding the referee, who was said to have missed a number of decisions including a Mascherano foul on Di Maria along with giving Luis Suárez a penalty near the end that has drawn massive criticism - along with some applause.
PSG protest and petition
Aytekin, however, will not referee another game in the Champions League this season, however. The controversial performance forced PSG to create a petition to have the match replayed for what they referred to as a "refereeing failure" by Aytekin.
Along with the petition and letter of protest, PSG sent UEFA a video with all of the controversial moves that, in the opinion of the Parisian club, hurt Unai Emery's side. They were beaten 6-1 against Barcelona, who won the tie 6-5 having lose the first leg 4-0 in Parc des Princes.
